About Me
I grew up in Louisiana. Then, I moved to north Texas. In spite of this, my dialect is not particularly southern or ‘country’ or New Orleans unlike some of my relatives. Natively, I have the pen-pin merger, labialization of final interdentals, and diphthongization of egg and leg (but not beg, keg). Not very exciting.
I attended The University of Louisiana at Monroe (when in high school), Loyola University New Orleans, and the University of North Texas (UNT). I received a bachelor’s in English and a master’s in linguistics from UNT. My first fields of study were jazz performance and music theory (although this was brief). I started here at UMass in 2008.
I hike and camp. In western Massachusetts, I have hiked up South Sugarloaf, North Sugarloaf, Mount Orient, Mount Tom, and Mount Toby. I want to go exploring the natural waterfalls here, but I haven’t yet. Favorite places outside of Massachusetts are Big Bend, the Chiricahua Mountains, Canyon de Chelly, and Yosemite. Next adventure should be Bryce Canyon because hoodoos are just too cool. Since learning XeLaTeX during the 2008–2009 winter break, I’ve developed an interest in typography and typesetting. I can cook a bit. Before finding linguistics, I flirted with the idea of going to a culinary school.
