Research Summary

I plan to survey pro-anorexic (pro-ana) groups in order to better understand the pro-ana identity and the community that has formed around it. Because pro-anorexic groups are based almost exclusively online, my methodology focuses primarily on Internet-based communities and, substantively, on bodies and embodiment, and gendered standards of beauty. Through this study, I will identify and re-present a community of members whose voices are largely ignored and/or unknown in academic literature. The survey I will distribute examines online habits, participants impressions of other pro-anorexic members, and what their own motivations are for participating or not participating in pro-ana activities.
