Electronics Stolen
Over the weekend we had someone break into our house. Being a 21 year old girl living on my own with 3 other girls and really no other experience, it really is a scary situation to have to go through. We came home Saturday after a day of shopping and running errands to find our front door wide open and our things all over the place. Right away I called my dad who told me to call the police and our landlord. Thankfully our landlord responded quickly (the police took about an hour and a half to come) and he had our locks changed right away since there really was no sign of forced entry so it could have been a previous tenant or someone who may have gotten a key from one in the past.
When the police finally got there we had to go through each room with them and tell them and write down what was missing and estimate how much it was worth. Thankfully my room had been locked and nothing was taken. But my roommates weren't so lucky. The roommate on the first floor with me had her camera, laptop and iPod taken. She was more upset because her project that she had worked on for weeks was on her computer and it was now gone and due the next day. My roommate upstairs had her lcd television taken and her laptop as well. Her camera and iPod were lying out on her desk but they weren't taken and my other roommate's room was locked as well.
Being broken into and getting our stuff stolen (well my roommates getting their stuff stolen) really was kind of a wakeup call for us. You never really think that things like that will happen to you. You see them on TV, hear about them in the news or from other people and just never really consider what you would do if you were in that situation. I really do think it prepared us to be safer and lock up our stuff and just to observe and be aware of our surroundings (too bad we learned the hard way). But now we know that we should have a detailed list of our valuables and proof that we had them like a serial number and a price. Things that we didn't think about before made us very aware and will help us in the future.
