Decorating as a Child
In our old house we had the cutest booth in our kitchen. I remember thinking that when I grew up I wanted one just like it and every morning my sister and I would play around it while we were waiting for our breakfast to be made. When we decided to move my parents found a house where the kitchen was divided by an island in the middle with a large counter. The appliances and kitchen part were on one side of the island, and the other side was a huge table and the part for entertaining guests, and then of course we had a dining room in the next room over.
I remember how upset I was to move so my parents let my sister and I help pick out a lot of things. I think I was most upset though about the booth being gone, since we spent basically every morning of our lives playing around it and sliding back and forth. So although they had already gotten a brand new kitchen table, they let us play around and help them pick out counter stools for the island, since that was probably where we would eat our breakfast or snacks. So we got to go to the furniture stores and swivel around on chairs and pick out the ones we liked the best. Even though looking back I'm pretty sure the ones we ended up getting were not the ones my sister and I had picked out, but we probably didn't realize it when we were that young.
Our rooms were the best part though, since we were so upset about moving they said we could completely redo our rooms however we wanted (mistake on their part ha). We picked out so much stuff and came up with outrageous themes (like mine was little mermaid) and I wanted a green and blue carpet, like the sea of course, and everything had to be flounder and Ariel was plastered around the entire room. I had stuffed animals; I even had flounder handles on my dresser and a flounder lamp. (Which obviously I ended up changing my room like 6 months later, because I decided I was too old for the little mermaid).
But other than our rooms, we had a big say in our basement. Although our parents got to pick out the bar and the bar stools and everything that went with that, we had our own enormous play room and a family room that we got to help decorate. It is funny that they thought they had to bribe us with helping decorate, because now I would do anything to get out of helping to do that, I am even dreading picking out stuff for my house next year.
