Debt and Relief
I think people want to try to explore every option possible before filing bankruptcy. I don't know a lot about it, but I did learn in finance that it really does hurt your credit score a lot for about ten years after and the credit report scoring can affect your whole life. The problem though is that we can't just start there with avoiding, because so many people in this country are already in debt. Now I know that a lot of people are in that situation where they just can't afford to grocery shop or pay for their kids clothing without credit and that is a whole different situation. But I am talking about the people who are getting themselves into debt over another pair of new shoes or a night out on the town.
We need to learn to buckle down and only buy what we can afford. Our economy isn't good right now and if we are spending money we don't have and it gets worse, we won't have money to live on. Right now we need to expect the worst and plan for it.
Learning about life
There were a lot of things that we did in my personal financial planning class last semester that I really wasn't expecting to do at all. We learned about planning for the future and everything that entails and we had a huge project where we had to decide where we would be ten years from now (married, with kids, what kind of job) and then we had to look up salaries, find houses, cars, plan a budget, look into home insurance, auto insurance and even schools for the kids that we might have.
The project was a lot harder than I thought it would be. It was supposed to teach us about how expensive living is right now and how much more expensive it is going to get when we get out of school and are ten years in the future. So that we could learn to plan ahead. We had to look up cars and homes in the city or state we wanted to live in. I picked Chicago, but plenty of my classmates chose to live in places far away. I think I even saw Texas online car quotes in the girl's project that sits next to me. Maybe she's from Texas now and wants to go back there or maybe she even just wants to live there, who knows. But it was hard to find homes (actual homes from actual listings) and figure out a mortgage payment to fit into our budgets.
I think the hardest part was finding medical insurance. When I searched it online, it came up with a ton of different things like UniCare and other searches and I had to go through a lot of them to figure out what fit my ‘lifestyle'. There were also other things we didn't think of right away that had to be added to our budget. Like if we planned on traveling, we needed to figure in travel medical insurance. It really was hard to plan for the future, but to be truthful; we really need to start, even though we are only 18 years old or 20 years old. It is never too early to start saving up and learning about money and investments. The more you know, the better the choices you can make for your future. Because unlike in this assignment, if you make the wrong choice, you don't just lose a few points from your grade.

Valentine's Day
The other day I was on a radio show and it was about giving advice and people would call in and ask questions and we would have to tell them what we think they should do or what we would do if we were in that situation. Surprisingly a lot more people than I thought would called in. One of the biggest questions was about Valentine's Day gifts. People wanted to know what they should get for their boyfriends or girlfriends for that special day.
We had a ton of different answers. Some of us said that should come up with creative Valentine's Day gifts like a coupon book full of things they could redeem like cuddling or even like a picture book of things that had done together. Other people said that they should get tickets to do something fun together like go to a comedy club or out to dinner or something fun that you both like to do. And then a lot of people stuck with the traditional roses and candy or something to that idea.
But seriously, this holiday is the worst one ever to shop for. There is so much pressure sometimes that it doesn't even seem like a good holiday it seems more superficial and full of worry and doubt. Not knowing what to get someone you love or like. It is hard to know especially if you haven't been together for very long (or actually even if you have). And you don't want to them be disappointed by your gift. Sometimes I just wish I was a mind reader. Guys have it easy for Valentine's Day. Flowers or candy or jewelry are obvious ideas for girls. But what about for guys? If you don't get them anything it doesn't seem fair especially if they make a big deal about it for you. But then how are you supposed to know what to get them? It isn't really a guy holiday and it is hard to know what a good gift for a guy would be for this occasion. I wish for Valentine's Day we could just hang out together and do something we both like to do instead of worrying about buying gifts for each other. This holiday is supposed to be about the people you love. So you should spend it with that person (or those people) and doing the things that you like to do.

Chocolates
Chocolates have been a way that my family counts down the days until Christmas for several years now. We have those calendars that are full of chocolates and each day (starting with December first) we get to open one of the doors and have a piece of chocolate.
Chocolate seems to be a popular way of celebrating other holidays too though. For news years every year we get chocolate covered strawberries, for Easter there are chocolate eggs, Valentine's Day has the traditional flower and chocolate candy gifts associated with it. And of course there is Halloween which is a holiday filled with chocolates and candy in general.
It sometimes makes you wonder how people used to celebrate holidays, before they got so decorated with candy and decorations and characters (like Santa and the Easter bunny). Holidays used to be about religion or a celebration of something with your family and friends. Now we have made it into such a big deal that sometimes I feel like people have lost its meaning among all of the extra stuff.
For Christmas, kids are often focusing on getting presents and decorating the tree and getting time off of school for the holiday and the snow and all of the other fun things that go along with that day. But people don't focus on what Christmas is really about so much anymore. Even my family is guilty of going to church less and less every year. We get caught up in the gift buying and shopping and having time off of school to hang out with our friends and we forget about the real meaning.
The fourth of July is another example as well as valentine's day. Both of these holidays seem to be caught up in either fireworks (a lot of kids don't even know what the fourth of July is) or for Valentine's Day the stress of having someone to buy a gift or get a gift for or actually doing the buying is stressful. People are making more of a deal about the little things then what it is actually about.
So I think this coming year for New Years Eve I am going to make a resolution to not get caught up in the extras and the little things, and to focus on what really matters and counts, like spending time with the people I love and celebrating together. Because without your friends and family what really makes a holiday?
NATURAL CARPET HAS KNOCKED THE BLUES AWAY
Recently I was diagnosed with several allergies. For the longest time I had not been feeling what I would consider well and finally my doctor said that there was nothing wrong with me and basically made it sound like it was all in my head. Every test that he had done had come up fine, but yet somehow I knew that this was not in my head. Finally, a good friend of mine said that maybe I should go and see an allergist and that many of the things that I was complaining of might be from allergies, well it turns out that she was right. One of the things that I found out was that I was allergic to my carpet. I didn't really know that I could be honestly, but when the doctor said it, I realized that a few months ago I had purchased some cheap carpet tiles. Don't get me wrong, they were a really good deal and they looked beautiful, but it never occurred to me that they could be related to my allergies. I didn't know that could even happen.
Well, since I have found out about my allergies I have had to rip up all the carpet in my home. I hated to do it, because it looked really great, but it was a rug and I couldn't be sick any more. I needed to start feeling good again and that meant that I needed to find some natural carpet. I really had never heard of it, but all I knew was it was going to help me to still have carpeting and feel better, so I was on board. I looked around, but several companies didn't even offer all natural carpeting, so I really thought that I was going to have to go with just hardwood floors. Don't get me wrong they look nice, but for me carpet is just more homey.

My father has owned a trucking company for as long as I can remember. He started out as a trucker and decided that he could open his own freight company and has worked hard at it for years. There have always been ups and downs with the business, but dad has always been able to take care of things.
