During the course of the semester, you will be asked to write two short essays that deal primarily with the reading assignments and the content of the lectures. Two weeks prior to the due date, we will circulate a handout specific to the paper and post the instructions here as well.

Please choose one of the following prompts from the questions listed below and write a well-argued 4-6 page essay response. Be sure to formulate a clear thesis and support your argument through the use of evidence drawn from the general information covered in the lectures and our readings (the primary sources I asked you to read each week). You should not consult other outside readings for this assignment.

1. Using the texts regarding Absolutism (Hobbs, James I, Richelieu, Saint-Simon), provide a definition of Absolutism that captures not only the theory of this political system, but also some of the practical aspects. How was Beaumarchais’s Barber of Seville an attack against this system? Be sure to draw on the texts and provide concrete examples (i.e. quotations) that support your argument.
