Wanted: Potential Business Partner for Farming Opportunity"
I am the proud owner of a parcel of land in Jamaica, Vermont, where
although I do not live full time, I maintain a "second home". Although
I have a strong interest in horticulture, I have very, very limited
farming experience. I am in excellent health, will soon be approaching
retirement age, and wish to explore the possibility of forming a business
relationship with an individual(s) who possess some agricultural experience,
is interested in residing full time on the property, and wishes to either
farm some of the land and/or raise livestock" Although the greatest part
of the land consists of a professionally managed upland forest, there are
about 30+ acres of quality, flat, tillable fields currently in "Timothy
and Clover" which have been utilized to a very limited extent for hay
harvesting operations. The fields have been "limed" annually but have not been
fertilized for the past two years. When not "hayed", the grass has been
cut and allowed to stand on the fields. The property also includes three
ponds on about 20 acres, a large post and beam equipment shed, and a
charming one bedroom/one bath, fully furnished, cottage with hot water
baseboard heat, a fireplace/wood burning stove, and magnificent vistas
and walking trails. Full farming equipment (plow, disc, planter,
mower/conditioner, square baler, tedder, rakes, etc), including a 2002
John Deere 5500 Tractor with cab (A/C & heat), a Ford 550 Diesel Dump
Truck with plow and spreader, and a large utility trailer are kept on
the property and are available to be used in this endeavor.
I envision an arrangement where the use of the land and equipment may
be partially offset by performing some limited upkeep of the property
along with some limited interest in profits. I am willing to make some
capital investment in start up costs. If this opportunity interests
you please contact me on my cell (407) 388-4242 to discuss details
of such an arrangement and possible time lines.

Triple Brook Farm – Work/Trade Opportunity
We are working diligently at present to plant out a
huge backlog of containerized plants which we have on hand. We consider
it very important to plant as much of this stock as soon as we reasonably can,
in order to help to insure that these plants will survive and prosper, and to
allow them to contribute to our nursery landscape and to serve as propagation
stock. Planting out this container stock should also greatly ease our
maintenance chores. Protecting all of the container stock for the winter,
unprotecting it in the spring, and having to move around, weed, water, and
otherwise care for this container stock represents a burdensome chore and a
heavy overhead expense. It will be a great relief to us not to have to
care for so much container stock, and in addition we feel that planting this
stock out in thoughtful fashion has great potential to make our nursery
landscape more interesting, attractive, productive, and useful as a reference
to ourselves and others who would
like to gain experience in the use of hundreds of species of ground covers and
other plants in a landscape setting. If anyone is interested in
helping with this planting project, we would be grateful for assistance.
We would not be in a position to pay cash for this work, but we are willing to
provide plant credit at a rate equivalent to just over $13 worth of plants per
hour. We will be glad to hear from anyone who is interested.

College of the Atlantic is seeking to fill two management positions
at its Beech Hill Farm, on Mount Desert Island, Maine. Beech Hill farm, located
15 miles from the main college campus, is a certified organic farm with 72 acres
of land, six of which are under cultivation.
See http://www.coa.edu/html/beechhillfarm.htm .
With predominately student labor, it grows organic vegetables, operates a farm
stand, provides wholesale goods to Island restaurants and food for the college
dining room. Among its other recent successes, it has generated a small operating
surplus, based on an annual budget of about $200,000.
First, we are looking to hire the Farm Operations Manager, who is expected to
live at the farm and then the Farm Business Manager. These two managers must
work effectively as a team, and work well with the College administration,
faculty and staff, and with its students, who comprise much of the farm labor.
The current management structure at the farm has two co-equal managers, reporting
to the Administrative Dean. This arrangement has worked effectively. However,
depending on the qualifications and abilities of the Farm Operations Manager,
when hired, the requirements for the Business Manager may change to best
complement the skills and abilities of the Operations Manager. Farm managers
also will be expected to contribute to the vision and implementation of the farm's
role in our new Sustainable Food Systems program and to continue strong
relationships with the Island community. We are flexible regarding the
management configuration, depending on the applicants.
Qualifications for the Farm Manager include: professional experience in the
operation of a small organic farm, ability to develop an annual operations plan,
evaluating crops to plant, managing and overseeing crop production and harvest,
willingness to work collaboratively, willingness to work long hours during much
of the year, good communications skills, and an interest in working with students
to provide experiential learning opportunities.
The mission of the farm is to produce certified organic food for College of the
Atlantic and the Mount Desert Island community, while using methods that maintain
the integrity and health of the land, and work toward environmental and economic
sustainability. Beech Hill Farm serves as a base for agricultural education and
experiential learning for college students and faculty.
