Executive Director Northeast Organic Farming Association of New Jersey

The Northeast Organic Farming Association of New Jersey (NOFA-NJ), based in
Pennington, NJ, is seeking an entrepreneurial executive director to build on
its 22-year history of promoting organic and sustainable agriculture in New
Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania and to lead a bold, new five-year initiative
that will dramatically expand opportunities for organic/sustainable
producers.

Founded in 1985, NOFA-NJ serves as a catalyst in the development of
sustainable, community-based food systems.  From 1990 until 2006 organic
certification was a central focus of NOFA-NJ¹s programs, including the
certification of organic farms, organic handlers and organic food
processors.  In 2006 the certification process was assumed by the New Jersey
Department of Agriculture.  With this transfer complete, NOFA-NJ is
concentrating its energies and resources on expanding its ongoing role in
building the supply of sustainable and organic products and increasing
market demand for producers through its current programs, including farmer
education, outreach, research and advocacy.

Current staffing includes three staff positions (executive director,
administrative director, program director), and is expected to grow to eight
or nine positions under the five-year initiative. The current budget of
$300,000 is expected to expand to $1 million or more.  The organization is
governed by a 15-member board of directors comprised of producers,
business/community leaders and other agricultural stakeholders. NOFA-NJ is a
501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and is an affiliate of the Northeast
Organic Farming Association, a seven-state coalition of sustainable
agriculture organizations.  For more information about NOFA-NJ, visit:
www.nofanj.org <http://www.nofanj.org> .

The incoming director will help create a bold response to a unique moment in
history.  Across the country, particularly in New Jersey, interest in
locally produced, organic/sustainable food products is growing rapidly among
consumers, restaurateurs, grocers and other food supply stakeholders.
NOFA-NJ has developed an ambitious strategic plan to help New Jersey
producers meet this rising demand, through our ongoing education programs,
as well as two start-up initiatives:
·      Center for Working Lands A policy center that will provide
leadership, technical support and advocacy on issues related to the
sustainable management of working lands and preservation of a true working
landscape.
·      New Jersey Agricultural Incubator An incubator-style farm
development program to prepare new farmer populations to farm organically in
New Jersey and help traditional farmers make the transition to organic and
sustainable methods.

Ideal candidates for this position will:
Be a champion (or have a compelling interest in becoming a champion) for
NOFA-NJ¹s mission.

Have strong experience and skills in program development and
fundraising, with a clear understanding of the opportunities and issues that
face a growing organization, particularly through project start-ups.

Possess excellent management skills, combining subject matter
expertise, strong administrative skills, and proven leadership ability.

Possess outstanding people-management skills, able to build
broader relationships and coalitions, as well as manage staff and associates
in day-to-day task completion.

Have experience in grass-roots policy development across a
variety of levels.

Have some background or experience in agriculture or
environmental advocacy.

Have superb written and verbal communication skills.
Be able to work effectively with the board of directors.
Be computer literate with experience with Microsoft Office,
internet and email.
Be capable of overnight business travel that includes at least
five to seven trips per year.
Possess an advanced degree in a relevant field or equivalent
experience.

To apply, email resume and a letter of interest, including salary
requirements, to: NOFA-NJ@transitionguides.com (E-mail applications are
preferred.) Resume reviews begin immediately. Full job profile available

UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR ORGANIC FARM MANAGERS

We are seeking an experienced couple, with a deep love of land and animals, to operate our  certified organic farm near Susquehanna, PA.,  located ½ hour southeast of Binghamton, NY, and 1 hour northeast of Scranton, PA.  Starting as salaried managers (including farmhouse, utilities, and other benefits), there is the potential to take over the farming business as well as part of the land through a long-term land lease. Since we are at the farm only part-time, we need mature, responsible people to run it as caringly as if it were, and might become, their own. Energy, self-motivation, a strong work ethic, and conservation ethic are essential along with established farming ability. Currently, we produce and sell a wide variety of vegetables, herbs, flowers and eggs through on-farm, farmers markets, restaurant, and health food store sales and are considering a CSA and other ideas to expand our small business, such as a small milk goat or sheep operation, small fruits, and medicinal herbs; open to other ideas.  In addition, the job entails caring for horses, chickens, and other farm animals and maintaining grounds, buildings, and equipment. We have produced maple syrup in the past, would like to do so again, and have two recently established beehives. We are flexible and open to discussing any ideas for enhancing the beauty, quality of life, and productivity of the farm with the sole exception of raising animals for food.  The farm is nestled in a lovely valley, surrounded by rolling hills and adjoining 8000 acres of PA state land. Two streams run through it, and there is a small pond.  Birds and other wildlife abound.  Our 200 acres are half forest, the rest pastureland, 2-1/2 acres of garden area, lending itself to intensive planting, and farm buildings: a large barn, machinery shed, stable, chicken house, maple syrup house, root cellar, and roadside stand as well as a newly constructed greenhouse, packing shed, and two moveable chicken houses, ready for our heritage chickens to be pastured in the spring. We have a complete line of farm and garden equipment and tools. There are two separate residences, the managers’ farmhouse and our home. In addition, there is another 100 acres 2-1/2 miles away that is half hayfields and half wild berries. We are currently working with a land trust to preserve the land and explore various options for transferring the farm operation to the next generation, at the same time that we and our children and grandchildren continue to enjoy its recreational aspects and protect the wildlife habitat. It is also a beautiful setting for offering farming and environmental workshops.  If interested, please send a resume and letter about your interests and goals to Shary and Gary Skoloff at sskoloff@comcast.net
