Position Responsibilities

1. Academic Partnerships, Alumni Relations, Veteran Corps (70%)
a. Support the development and implementation of marketing campaigns to key
stakeholders (students, faculty and advisors, universities, general public)
including marketing development & distribution, direct marketing, and e-marketing
campaigns
b. Research, assess, and pursue relationships with academic institutions,
programs, and professionals for recruitment purposes.
c. Coordinate and support campus-based promotional activities
d. Lead on-campus student recruitment efforts for designated institutions
and expand the number of schools, departments and individuals who refer
students to FSD
e. Develop and carry out strategy for maintaining contact with veterans/past
volunteers to benefit FSD and offer value to those veterans.
f. Identify, recruit, train, and manage Veteran Corps
g. Train and manage interns that work on marketing and development tasks

2. FSD Image Projection: (20%)
a. Design and coordinate website material
b. Design and coordinate print materials (brochures and posters) for marketing
and outreach
c. Manage quarterly newsletter by collaborating with others to produce
the content, and then coordinating materials for final product
d. Represent FSD at events to ensure consistent and efficient communication of
the FSD image for recruitment and fundraising purposes.

3. Domestic Events and Partnerships: (10%)
a. Structure FSD presence at events for fundraising, educational, and
recruitment purposes- staffing, materials preparation, scheduling, coordinating, and
marketing.
b. Collaborate with other organizations in hosting or sponsoring other local
international development events and initiatives.
c. Develop and manage collaboration with other organizations in the Bay Area
that are working internationally
d. Assist with International Development Series

Minimum Qualifications
- BA degree required; MA or MBA degree in a relevant field preferred.
- International development experience, preferably involving grassroots community initiatives
- 3+ years relevant experience in international program administration and marketing
- Significant experience in customer relations, public relations and/or sales.
- Prior experience in managing volunteer and service learning programs highly preferred.
- Experience training and managing interns or volunteers;
- Excellent communication and customer relationship building skills
- Excellent MS Office/Windows skills
- Excellent written and verbal skills, including strong public speaking skills;
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and work under deadlines;
-Self-motivated and creative problem-solver
-Ability to work as a team member and independently

Desired Experience:
- At least two years of work experience in the developing world preferred.
- Knowledgeable about social, political and economic issues of concern to the people of the developing world.
- Program management experience, including strategic planning and evaluation;
- Experience in planning and conducting a variety of outreach events.

East New York Farms! Urban Agriculture Coordinator

East New York Farms! is seeking an Urban Agriculture Coordinator. The position will have the following duties: manage urban mixed vegetable and small fruit, recruit and train local gardeners in urban production for market, organize local gardeners and develop their capacity to support each other and manage the farmers’ market, support outreach/promotion efforts of project, supervise and train teens (ages 13-16), assist with designing and leading lessons to build skills and help youth understand the social context of their work, and support farmers’ market operations.

The East New York Farms! Project’s mission is to organize youth and adult residents to address food issues in their community by promoting local and regional sustainable agriculture and community-based economic development. East New York Farms! works to grow food for the community, engage youth in hands-on agricultural learning and leadership training, develop economic opportunities for small-scale producers and other entrepreneurs through a neighborhood farmers’ market, preserve community gardens as open space, and educate residents about healthy food and healthy environments.

AmeriCorps A*VISTA – Extension 4-H/Youth Program Assistant, VT

UVM Extension 4-H programs offer leadership and learning opportunities for youth to become productive citizens and catalysts for positive change. The Youth Horticulture Project works with youth from life and job skills through agriculture.

Responsibilities are to help to build UVM Extension youth programs in Bennington County. Lead volunteers and young people in their work on the farm and in the community. Professor and Director of Agricultural Sustainability

 

Position Description: The UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CA&ES) and the UC Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) seek an internationally recognized leader to serve as Director of the CA&ES Agricultural Sustainability Institute (ASI) and the systemwide ANR Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (SAREP). In addition, the selected candidate will be appointed as a full professor and the first holder of the UC Davis W.K. Kellogg Endowed Chair in Sustainable Food Systems. As Director of the ASI, responsibilities include (1) providing leadership and organizational support to the research, outreach and extension efforts in agricultural sustainability on the Davis campus; (2) interfacing with faculty offering undergraduate and graduate curricula related to agricultural sustainability; (3) establishing and maintaining contact with scientists working in agricultural sustainability at other institutions, and (4) leading efforts to obtain extramural funds to support research and outreach activities in agricultural sustainability.  As Director of SAREP, responsibilities include: (1) developing and implementing short and long-term plans for integration of innovative research in agricultural sustainability on the ANR campuses (Davis, Berkeley and Riverside) and into Cooperative Extension programs throughout the state; (2) providing leadership and prioritization of, and expanding funding for, the SAREP competitive grants program; (3) providing statewide leadership for the distribution of information related to sustainability through conferences, short-courses, workshops, publications and on-farm demonstrations; and (4) providing leadership in communicating with stakeholders about sustainable systems. As Professor and Kellogg Endowed Chair in Sustainable Food Systems, the incumbent is expected to conduct teaching, research and outreach in the area of sustainable food systems.

 

The Director will report to the Dean for matters relating to the ASI, and will report to the ANR Associate Vice President or his/her delegate for matters relating to SAREP. The appointment as holder of the Kellogg Endowed Chair is for a period of five years, and can be renewed following successful review at the department, division and campus levels.  The candidate will be expected to participate in undergraduate or graduate instruction.

The successful candidate will be expected to initiate, coordinate, conduct, and/or participate in research and educational programs promoting ASI and SAREP initiatives. The candidate will be expected to develop a research and outreach program consistent with an appointment in the California Agricultural Experiment Station. The Director position requires demonstrated exceptional interpersonal and networking skills and the ability to work effectively with individuals representing a diversity of academic backgrounds, interests and positions both within and external to the University of California.  Demonstrated skill in obtaining extramural funds is expected.

FARMING TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE COORDINATOR, Lowell Massachusetts

BACKGROUND: The New Entry Sustainable Farming Project (NESFP) assists immigrants and refugees with farming backgrounds to develop viable farming operations in Massachusetts.  Community Teamwork, Inc. and Tufts University sponsor the NESFP, along with multiple partner organizations such as University of Massachusetts, USDA Farm Service Agency, and MA Department of Agricultural Resources.   See http://www.nesfp.org for more information on the project.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The candidate’s main responsibilities will be to provide technical assistance to new and continuing immigrant and refugee farmers on multiple aspects of farm enterprise development: finding and leasing/buying farmland; recordkeeping, business plans, marketing strategies, coop participation, and various farming operations.  In particular:

·        Organize a comprehensive technical assistance (TA) program for beginning farmers as part of their first year training and technical assistance program.

·        Organize TA for a new “transitioning farmer” initiative to assist more experienced farmers to develop independent farming enterprises.

·        Communicate TA opportunities and expectations effectively to farmers, using interpreters as necessary.

·        Review and solicit farming resources that are suited to assist farmers looking to expand farm enterprises.

·        Prepare new materials for use by farmers and by providers for TA activities.

·        Organize / coordinate farmer meetings and participation at meetings, trainings, conferences and field trips. 

·        Connect farmers with USDA and other farm agencies regarding loans, insurance, and related services; and build links to the mainstream farm community through farm visits and participation at farm meetings.

·        Organize roles for other staff and project partners to provide or assist TA activities. 

·        Establish a “case management” approach to coordinating TA for each farmer or farm /household or group. 

·        Establish data collection and tracking systems to monitor TA provided to all farmers.

·        Prepare regular reports for other staff, for farmers, and for grantors. 

·        As appropriate, participate in preparation and delivery of NESFP education and training workshops for new and continuing farmers on multiple aspects of farm enterprise development.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:            

·        BA/BS degree; advanced degree preferable. Agricultural degree and/or relevant training and experience in multiple aspects of farming and farm enterprise essential.

·        Highly organized - maintains appropriate schedules and timetables for implementation of activities; responds effectively to requests for assistance; adapts strategies to address technical assistance needs.

·        Leadership - takes responsibility for developing and implementing programs and services; uses outcome-driven approaches for assessment of activities; promotes self-sufficiency among farmers.

·        Community organizing and cross-cultural experience helpful.  Must be able to work independently in a team environment.

·        Effective in communications with diverse constituencies, most with limited English language and literacy.  

·        Works independently but as part of a team including staff, partners and interns.

·        Computer, writing and communication skills necessary.  Word processing (MSWord), PowerPoint, Excel.

·        Available to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends. 

·        Local travel required - must have reliable transportation for travel around Eastern Massachusetts.

The United Teen Equality Center, a youth organization located in downtown Lowell, is in search of a part-time Farm Coordinator to help run its Youth Farming Project on 2.5 acres of land in Dracut, just outside of Lowell. We recently completed our first farming season last summer. Our goal is for the project to be youth-led, therefore, we are looking an individual who can serve as guidance and support for all youth involved (supervising approximately 12 youth during the summer and 4 youth throughout the remainder of the year).

 

We are looking for an individual that is skilled in sustainable, urban farming techniques, with the ability to both teach and apply

these techniques. As well, this individual should be committed to empowering work with Lowells young people, with specific focus of the farm projects educational focus including: environmental justice/racism, imperialism and its effects, conventional versus sustainable farm practices, and sustainable living.

NOFA/Mass has been working effectively on making raw milk available to consumers and helping farmers work out the details of production. We would like to take this work to the next step and help stem the tide of the loss of dairies in the state by working with farmers to overcome barriers, convert to organic methods, and investigate new marketing opportunities. We are posting a position to do the following:

By August 15 the person must put together a comprehensive report of information gathered and provide an analysis of how NOFA/Mass could best tackle this issue starting in the fall of 2005. This research position could easily be a precursor to taking on the defined organic diary survival position in the fall.

This position will begin as soon as it is filled. The rate is hourly ($10.50/hour) and the work is mostly with other NOFA/Mass staff, but sometimes NOFA/Mass members as well. Must be able to complete work on a timely basis, be helpful and personable over email and able to troubleshoot problems as they arrive. This person reports to the Executive Coordinator.  Expect anywhere from 5 to 40 hours of work per month, depending on the time

of year and amount of programs needing website maintenance. The "normal" heaviest times are from November - February and July - August. This person will also be involved with on-line purchasing.

The Assistant Vegetable Grower will assist the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Manager in all aspects of production and harvest of organic vegetables for distribution to CSA members.

            An experienced professional is needed to lead Foodshare's resource development functions, including grants, direct mail, major giving, events, food donations, and volunteers.   As Foodshare's chief development officer, the Director is responsible for strategy development, work planning, budgeting, management of a department of eight people, ongoing evaluation and analysis, and support to Foodshare's President and Board of Directors as they carry out their development responsibilities.  The

Colchester Farm - Position Announcements

 

2005 Growing Season

 

Colchester Farm is a 340-acre farm located on the Sassafras River, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. We grow organic vegetables, fruits, herbs, flowers and free-range chickens. Much of the produce goes to a 75-family CSA that distributes in the Upper Eastern Shore region.  2005 will be the third year of operation for this segment of the farm, which has considerably expanded over the past few years.

 

The Assistant Manager and Intern positions will begin in April and end in October, with the possibility of extending through the winter.  Tasks will be focused around harvesting produce but will also include planting, transplant production, irrigation projects, crop maintenance, chicken care, and direct marketing through farmers markets, and the CSA.

 

Individuals enthusiastic about sustainable agriculture will be the best candidates. Colchester Farm is in the process of transitioning into sustainable/organic farming practices and diversifying its markets. We also hope to soon establish educational and research components at the farm.

 

Qualifications

 

Assistant Manager:  Minimum two years of experience farming or gardening, preferably using organic production methods.  Ability to work long hours under extreme weather conditions (heat and wet).  Valid driver's license.  Familiarity with operation of tractors and farm equipment preferred.  Time commitment of 6 months (mid-April to mid-October).

 

Additional preference will be given to individuals with a degree in a related field or progress towards one.

 

Intern:  No experience required, but the best candidates will have an interest in sustainable agriculture.

Local Food Initiative Coordinator  - Rutland County

 

A collaborative group of farmers and supportive organizations has been formed in the Rutland Region to seek ways of increasing the viability of agriculture in this part of Vermont.  This group has received some grant funding to create a concentrated effort at the regional level to bolster local purchases of regionally produced agricultural goods, refine land use plans and regulations to support agricultural uses, and increase the level of networking and collaboration among farmers and local organizations.

 

The Rutland Regional Planning Commission, as lead agency on this grant, seeks an

individual that will coordinate, manage and implement this nine-month project. The project has a total budget of $6,000 for this position.

 

This is a part-time contracted position with the freedom to work out of ones home.

Among other things, the job will involve phone and in-person outreach to local farmers and businesses, organizing meetings, communicating with the media, and writing press releases, meeting minutes and other documents.

Watershed Agricultural Council - Farm To Market Manager

The Farm to Market Manager will direct the development and implementation of a comprehensive program that will enhance the economic viability of farms in the New York City Watershed Region through farm product promotion, marketing, distribution, and sales system.

 

Duties and responsibilities will include:

The further development of the Watershed Agricultural Council’s (WAC) Agriculture Economic Sustainability and Outreach Program (AESOP) plan.

Development and management of a regional Buy Local Campaign.

Implementation of a comprehensive farm to market system between farmers of the watershed region and their current and prospective markets.

Working with the appropriate Committee(s) and partners of the WAC.

Coordinating and applying resources to help private entrepreneurs develop economic development projects that are consistent with farm viability goals of the WAC.

Identify and seek grants and other resources to implement and expand the program.

Manage budgets and grant funds consistent with WAC policy.

Report project results and program accomplishments as required to WAC Committee(s), partnering agencies, and funding sources.

 

Education and Experience Requirements:

Experience specific to the duties and responsibilities as described above.

A College Degree in Agricultural Economics, Food Systems, Marketing Management or a field that prepared you for the specific duties and responsibilities of this position.

Experience in agricultural economic development and regional food systems.

Extensive experience as a Project Manager and the demonstrated ability to work cooperatively to coordinate diverse groups and individuals.

Experience in financial management of programs and projects.

A minimum of 5 years of directly related job experience.

 

Reporting Relationships:

Works under the direct supervision of the WAC Executive Director.

Reports to the AESOP Committee on accomplishments and approval for new initiatives.
