Getting equipped for the outdoor life.

Introduction.

Whether your idea of enjoying the outdoor life is going for a walk in the local countryside, park, trekking through the wilderness or something more extreme like snow-boarding off-cornice; having the correct gear will add greatly to both your safety and your enjoyment. Whether it’s having outer clothing or footwear that as well as keeping you warm also keeps you dry or knowing that the equipment you’ve got is reliable and safe; it is well worth the extra initial cost to buy outdoor gear manufactured by well known and reputable brands. It’s also advisable to buy the outdoor gear from a company that specializes in selling it.

Protective outdoor clothing.

The most common piece of protective outdoor clothing bought is beyond doubt what are commonly referred to as waterproof jackets. The days of waterproof jackets being cumbersome rubber and plastic garments or nylon ones that were inefficient are long gone. Whilst today’s modern waterproof jackets come in arrange of styles and lengths all of the top quality ones are totally waterproof and are made from ‘breathable’ materials - keeping rainwater out whilst letting perspiration escape to prevent that uncomfortable ‘damp’ feeling inside the garment. One such make of waterproof jacket is the North Face range. Given the importance of ‘layers’ in protective clothing, there is also a range of fleeces to fit inside North Face jackets. Also available from North Face are outdoor pants. A full range of pants can be bought from fully waterproof ones; with an outer nylon layer and an inner breathable one to pants that could be used just about anywhere as casual walking pants. If your ‘thing’ is snow-boarding then owning a Burton snow-board and turning up at the terrain park with the latest Burton jacket and pants on; will get you noticed before you’ve even started to warm up for a half-pipe.

Outdoor footwear.

Anyone that has ever done any sort of trekking or distance walking will appreciate the need for comfort in their footwear. If you’re out trekking for a few days the last thing you need is to be walking in something that is uncomfortable. Whilst they’re best known for their track shoes, Nike also produces some great walking shoes like their Bandolier model. You can also buy Nike walking and Sports sandals as well as waterproof shoes for kayaking or scuba diving. A good online outdoor gear store will also stock specialist outdoor shoes like the New Balance models. These fashionable shoes are made with people in mind who might have wider than normal feet or could need extra arch support built into their shoes. Don’t forget that when buying walking or trekking shoes that will be used in rainy weather or that might become immersed in water, due to crossing streams or travelling over ground with lying water; you need to satisfy yourself that they are suitably waterproof for the job.

Safety when out in the great outdoors.

When going on an outdoor adventure having a map and compass - and knowing how to properly use them - is always a good idea. However, to help you enjoy your time outdoors there are now a host of electronic products that can help to keep you safe and well. Companies like Garmin now produce hand-held GPS devices which, as well as having ‘on-board’ maps, have a wealth of other information about the region you’re passing through. Some of the Garmin devices can even double as walkie-talkies. Anyone interested in wilderness/endurance trials, or Orienteering, might be interested to know that they also produce a range of outdoor monitoring gear to measure and record your performance and health.

Buying outdoor gear.

In buying outdoor gear from an outdoor specialist you can be confident that they know the products they’re selling and can advise you as to their suitability for any particular adventure. These days there are, of course, some great online outdoor gear stores, who can offer not only a great level of service - but also incredibly competitive prices.
