DIRECTING I is intended to be a practical exploration
of the theory and craft of stage direction. Particular focus will be
placed on the fundamentals of storytelling, analysis and organization,
use of bodies and space and working with actors. In addition participants
will be asked to see and respond to as much theater as possible. In
the context of discussions, exercises, various scene work and the continual
hunt for "moments of insight" participants will develop an
understanding of basic directorial responsibilities and techniques necessary
for taking a work from the page to the stage. More

DIRECTING II is intended to be a practical (as in "learn by doing")
follow-up to Theater 345. Students will have the opportunity to more
fully explore the fundamental concepts and strategies presented in the
previous course, familiarize themselves with recurring directorial challenges,
as well as present to a public audience. Through use of discussions,
impromptus, and in-class-rehearsals students will develop a hands-on

"Every time an actor performs, he or she implicitly enacts a 'theory'
of acting-a set of assumptions about the conventions and style which guide
his or her performance, the structure of actions which he or she performs,
the shape that those actions take(as a character, role, or sequence of actions
as in some performance art) and the relationship to the audience."
Phillip B. Zarrrilli from Acting (Re)Considered
ACTING THEORY is intended to be a preliminary examination of performance
studies literature with a focus on the craft of acting. The course is geared
toward the theoretical interests and practical needs of student directors
with an emphasis on "responding creatively" to the material in
written form and actual performance.More

Group Studio is not really a class. It's more
like--a scheduled window of opportunity for playful, yet productive,
collaboration. It is expected that over the course of the next three
years you will be working with your classmates in artistically intimate
situations. Group Studio is chance for you to lay the groundwork for
that intimacy as well as "express yourself" to the rest of
the department as a group. Because there is very little prescribed structure
for this opportunity it is extremely important for all of those involved
to maintain focus and communicate continuously. After the first three
or four sessions participants will be left on their own to create a
performance piece to be viewed by the department and invited guest.
Please understand, this experience is primarily made up of what you
bring to it individually and what you can make of it as a group. During
the initial sessions you will get acquainted with your collaborators
and review the parameters of the final project. You will be required
to meet weekly at the assigned time to develop and rehearse this project.
One person from the group will be selected to relay progress reports,
needs, etc. to the instructor. As usual, should you or any member of
your I.M. Force be caught or killed
Just kidding. Perform your
task. Have fun
THEATER 750/DIRECTING STUDIO
Wednesdays 1:25-4:25pm

DIRECTING STUDIO is a graduate student forum for peer response and interaction
to support the production work of each participant. In addition to that
function, it is our aim to expose the graduate director to experiences
and artists that can help them to develop the strategies and sensibilities
necessary for a sustained professional life as an artist/ director.
To that end, the class will work on devised directorial projects and
interact with experienced artist/directors and other theatre practitioners
whose work we feel will be of considerable value to the graduate director.
As well, the class will view and discuss the work(in-class and departmental)
of their peers(and when possible outside work that the group has seen)
on an ongoing basis. More
