DIRECTING II is intended to be a practical (as in "learn by doing") follow-up to Theater 345. Students will have the opportunity to more fully explore the fundamental concepts and strategies presented in the previous course, familiarize themselves with recurring directorial challenges, as well as present to a public audience. Through use of discussions, impromptus, and in-class-rehearsals students will develop a hands-on understanding of the directing process.
REQUIREMENTS include participation in discussions, impromptus and in-class-rehearsals, which together, account for 50% of the grade. The other 50% of the grade is comprised of a public presentation of a selected one-act no more than 20 minutes in length(30%) and five written responses to presented work(20%). (Details about one-acts and written responses will be outlined in class.)
BOOKS for this course include:
A Sense of Direction, William BallOPTIONAL
Thinking Like a Director, Michael Bloom
8 Tens @ 8, Chandler & Patterson, Eds.
Telling Tales, Eric Lane, Ed.
Take Ten, Lane & Shengold, Eds.
THE SCHEDULE of activities for this course will revolve around the preparation of one-act projects. Every class session will include a check-in about the progress and challenges of each project followed by impromptu scene work and/or in-class-rehearsal of one-acts. Projects will be presented in Studio 204 or The Curtain(depending upon availability) between noon and 1:10pm. This semester's presentation dates are April 23, April 28, April 30, May 5, and May 7. We will not meet on the following dates: February 17, March 17, March 19, and April 21. All written responses will be due by 5pm on May 14, the last day of class.
