COMMITTEE

MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF APRIL 21, 1998

Present: E. Anderson, E. Cutting, D. Damery, J.Dubach, E. Hurn,
          T. Jackson, B. MacDougall (Chair)

Bruce MacDougall called the meeting to order at 2:35

1. Approval of Minutes

The minutes of the March 24, 1998, meeting were approved.

2. Announcements

   a. Draft WWW Guidelines were presented by John Dubach. These
were created by the Policy Subcommittee of the (5 campus)
Information Technology Council. Individuals may respond as
      desired to wwwguide@umassp.edu by 6/1/98.

      These guidelines are available at
      http://www.umassp.edu/html/itc/subcom/policy/wwwstds.html

   b. Pat Kochin's e-mail announcement of the May 8 start of a
search engine to find Web pages on our systems raised the
      following questions:
      1) What about U.Mass. material not at U.Mass. addresses?
      2) What about 'confidential' web pages? There appears to
be the opportunity to keep a web page from being included
in a search, but why have a web page for private material?

   C. Our TLTR motion is making the rounds of other Faculty Senate
Councils, especially Program and Budget, and Academic Matters.
There is no indication yet when it might be on the Senate Agenda.

3. Retired Faculty Association may have an opportunity for 'pilot'
project training of trainers for senior citizen computer literacy.
No problems or policy issues were foreseen for our retired faculty
to get U.Mass.Access accounts or use U.Mass. facilities.

The proposed training would be a one-time demonstration project
for a doctoral student working with Ernie Anderson.

4. Family Housing telecommunications concerns were raised by Ed Cutting,
who passed out parts of the minutes of the meeting of this Committee
on October 24, 1996. The issues seemed to be:

   a. Plans to network places where graduate students live

   b. Several different agencies seem to have overlapping responsibilities
      for dealing with problems.

It was the sense of the meeting that it was desirable to have
documented cases of problem situations - a verifiable log of problems.
Ed Cutting will provide Johh Dubach appropriate primary data.

5. The meeting was adjourned a 3:20 PM.

Respectfully submitted
G. Ernest Anderson, acting substitute Secretary
