Meeting Minutes 10 November 2006 1100 - 1230 Campus Center Room 903 Attendees: Jennifer Parenti, Chair Joe Kunkel, Secretary Marilyn Billings, Guest Speaker Mark Whelihan, Guest Speaker Nikki Stoia Ben Hood Donna Zucker Russell Tessier Howard Stidham Emily Alling 1) Marilyn Billings (Library) gave a presentation on the Institutional Repository. The repository was initiated in response to a Spring 2006 faculty survey and is designed to archive faculty & department research papers, host on-line journals and provide space for other forms of academic information sharing. It is based on a commercial program called ScholarWorks and is hosted on local UMass servers. Each department is able to customize the look & feel and review process for their department areas and Marilyn will be working with each school to determine how they want to manage their areas. The repository is located at: http://scholarworks.umass.edu 2) Mark Whelihan (Campus Security) spoke about ongoing problems with Audio-Visual equipment security in various locations around campus. There are certain buildings which seem to be more susceptible to break-ins than others, including Herter, Bartlett and Morrill. Campus Security is requesting the faculty take more accountability for university property and ensure classrooms, offices, laboratories and other areas are properly secured when not in use. Additional security measures, including proximity cards and additional surveillance equipment, are being investigated for potential use on campus. There is an additional problem with theft of personal property, primarily due to faculty leaving their offices open and unattended during the day. As a result, UMass has become a target for criminal enterprises throughout the region, including gangs from Springfield and Hartford. The committee agreed to draft a list of recommended security measures for all faculty and staff and propose it to the Senate at-large at a later meeting. 3) The next meeting will be held on Friday, 8 December at 1130 in the Campus Center. Room TBD. All members are asked to bring their spring schedules with them so a good meeting time can be established for next semester.
