Medieval Europe

The Middle Ages are usually dated from the fall of the Roman Empire (c. 325) to about the mid-fifteenth century (c. 1450). Some academics move the dates slightly. The period of Roman decline is called Late Antiquity, and for some academics, extends into the 500's.

For students of English literature, our chief interests are the classical inheritance (Greek and Roman literature and drama), the vernacular writing of the emergent barbarian states, the rebirth of vernacular drama, and the development of Christian literary genres alongside continuing secular traditions.
