Nursing Students work to Prevent Hepatitis C Virus

February 28, 2007 Professor Zucker and 3 student nurses held a 3 hour Hepatitis C Screening and testing Clinic at the Samaratin Inn, Westfield, MA.  Services offered to 22 residents included screening and testing for HIV and  Hepatitis C virus, as well as vaccinations for Hepatitis A and B.  Hepatitis B is 100 times more contagious and Hepatitis C is four times more contagious than HIV.

This Mobile Outreach Project is sponsored by the MA Department of Public Health and Roche Pharmaceuticals and has targeted locations in which clients are not usually linked to prevention services.  Across this year these services will reach locations in Hampden, Hampshire and Franklin Counties.  Apart from the screening services, student nurses will make follow up visits and continue to provide counseling and referral information.
