My research is focused on the management of natural resources with emphasis in marine and coastal ecosystems. I am experienced in using contingent valuation, designing experimental economics games, conducting choice experiments, collecting primary data, designing surveys and econometric modeling of panel data. I applied these methodologies in the study of forest protected areas, marine reserve management, climate change effects, biodiversity protection and ecotourism. My research provides to policy makers innovative solutions for challenges in natural resource management.
I was awarded my Ph.D degree in Resource Economics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in spring 2011. My dissertation uses contingent valuation to estimate willingness to pay to reduce risk of invasive species to Galapagos Islands. I use a model of tourists’ choices to evaluate price structures to reduce the likelihood of new invasive species. The lead paper from my dissertation is under review at Environment and Development Economics. The second is in preparation for submission to Ecological Economics. Here some pictures of my work in Galapagos.
My previous research includes a study of the determinants of fishermen’s compliance to regulations in the Galapagos Marine Reserve, published in Ocean and Coastal Management, and a study of cost competitiveness of biomass energy generation, published in Biomass and Bioenergy.
Currently, I am a Post-Doctoral Research Associate and Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Resource Economics, at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. . I collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of researchers to evaluate climate change effects on fisheries management in the Northeast of the United States, funded through the National Science Foundation. I created a series of economic experiments using the program Z-Tree© to evaluate changes on fishers’ behavior due to extreme climate events and policy interventions. These experiments were implemented successfully during spring 2012 to a group of 145 students. I am working on two peer-reviewed papers using these data.
