Personal ProfileClement A. Seldin, Professor Emeritus, received his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Adelphi University, Masters in Education (Curriculum and Instruction) from Boston University and Doctorate in Social Foundations of Education from the University of Massachusetts. His courses on the foundations of American public education focus on 20th century history and philosophy. His early research was directed toward teacher education selectivity and parent/teacher conferencing. This school conferencing research guided the development of "Interactive Conferencing" -- a system designed to promote effective parent/teacher communication and used in many schools in New England. In response to his research on syllabus design, he was invited to join a team of university faculty who conduct intensive workshops on Academic Portfolio Development at colleges and universities in the United States. And for the several years, Professor Seldin worked with Columbia University (Teachers College) on two major studies of schools of education – one a national study and the other regional. As a member of Site Visit Teams for this research project, he has studied schools of education in North Carolina, Michigan, Virginia, Kansas, Missouri, New Hampshire, and Wisconsin. He has also served as consultant to major publishing companies for many years. On a professional level, Professor Seldin received the highest faculty teaching honor at the University of Massachusetts, the Distinguished Teaching Award. In addition, he has been honored with the School of Education Outstanding Teaching Award; the Order of Omega Award for Outstanding Teaching; and the TEACHnology Fellowship. On a personal level, he is very proud of his receipt of a Black Belt in Karate after years of intense study; an honor he received with his son.
