Educ. 351 Social Foundations of Education

This course is designed to stimulate intelligent, critical analysis of 20th century American Education. We explore selected social, historical, and political foundations of American Education focusing on the sociology of public schooling, teacher roles, and the philosophical and psychological aims of education. This framework will be investigated by focusing on selected contemporary problems in public education.

This course is also designed to help students identify the degree to which their interests and strengths are consistent with those demanded by the profession. Educ. 351 satisfies 3 credits of Foundations for a Minor in Education.

Educ. 645 Inquiry into American Schooling: Controversial Issues

Contemporary educational practices. Emphasis on promising developments in curriculum staffing, and organization of public schools, and past and future innovations. Specifically, this course investigates controversial educational issues that affect the lives of teachers and students in today’s classrooms. It explores the complex web of issues that children, families, and educators face in our diverse society. Its purpose is to help students appreciate the complexity of each issue and to illuminate the conclusion that being an absolutist on controversial issues undermines children and education.
