Assignment on Tense and TPs Due on April 12 1. For the following bracketed TPs, determine whether they are finite or non-finite. Examine them along the following dimensions: a. does the verb inflect for subject-verb agreement? b. is an overt subject possible/required? if so, what is the case of the subject - nominative or accusative? c. can Tense distinctions (present/past) be marked on T? i. I thought that [you liked these apples]. ii. I demand that [you leave]. iii. I want [you to leave]. iv. I think that [you might leave]. 2. Draw trees for the following sentences using the modified rules that we have discussed in class. (Subjects should be represented as specifiers of T and posssessors as specifiers of D. Separate tense affixes and the possessive determiner from their hosts.) i. He thinks that you like John's brother. ii. That he likes you bothers John's brother. 3a. Draw a tree for the following sentence: When John sings this song, he smiles. (Treat "when" as the C head of the CP adjunct.) 3b. The sentence in 3a has only one possible structure, where the CP adjunct is adjoined to the matrix TP. Now consider the following sentence: He smiles when John sings this song. Here the word order and meaning is compatible with two structures, one where the CP adjunct is right adjoined to TP and one where it is right adjoined to VP. Draw both these trees. 3c. Only one of these two trees is compatible with what we know about binding theory. Use binding theory to rule out one of these trees. Provide the relevant data and explain how it follows from the data and binding theory that one of these attachments cannot be actually available.
