Assignment on Verb Movement
                                  Due April 26


1. In the last assignment, many of you neglected to mark the verb movement of the auxiliary. 
Remember the following three way distinction:
i. Modals are born in T.
ii. Auxiliaries are born in V and can move to T.
iii. Main Verbs are born in V and stay there. 

Keeping the above in mind, draw trees for the following sentences:

a. Can Dawn have eaten that apple?
b. Has John eaten that apple?
c. Did John eat that apple? 

Show all movements, do-support, and other operations involved. 

2. Draw trees for the following cases of VP-ellipsis and VP-topicalization. 

a. Mary said that John had stolen the relic and stolen the relics, he had.
b. John has read this book and Mary has, too.
c. Mary thinks that John eats cuitlacoche every day and eat cuitlacoche every day, he does.
d. John likes this book and Mary does, too. 

[To represent conjunction use: TP -> TP Conj TP]

Draw trees for the following ungrammatical cases of VP-ellipsis and VP-topicalization:
e. *Mary said that John had stolen the relic and have stolen the relics, he did.
f. *John has read this book and Mary did, too.

From the ungrammaticality of e and f, what can you say about the relative ordering of the
following operations:
i. do-support, ii. verb movement, iii. VP-ellipsis/topicalization
