The Flock
We have a flock of about 40 registered Dorset ewes of breeding age. We are beginning are fall lambing. The UMass Dorset flock is a closed ewe flock, with only new rams brought in every few years. We strive to keep our ewes productive for the majority of their lives, and currently have many ewes over ten still producing multiple healthy lambs for us each year. We currently breed for spring lambs, and rebreed in the spring for fall lambs, to emphasize the out of season breeding qualities of our Dorsets.
- Our ewes spend most of the year out on pasture, being brought inside in the spring (and now the fall!) to lamb, so students can gain lambing experience and learn management techniques.
- Our girls can be seen at Hadley Farm during the academic year, and in South Deerfield during the summer.
