WebCT Icon Quicklist

Note: The following images are examples of the icons that can be used for different functions
within WebCT depending on how the Instructors/Course Designers have set the course.

Assignments
This tool allows the instructor to disseminate assignments to students electronically. Features include assignment description, maximum grade value, and a utility for file distribution as well as student submissions.
Calendar
The Calendar tool provides a way for the instructor (and students, if the instructor enables this option) to exchange information about class events and important dates. Students can also use this as a personal organizer.
Chat
The Chat tool allows course participants to have real-time conversations online. It can be used for discussions, group meetings, virtual office hours for the instructor, and tutorial sessions.
Compile
This tool allows the students to select part or the entire course content for viewing in a single window. This simplifies downloading /printing as multiple pages of content are compiled into a single document.
Course Content/Content Module
The Course Content Modules are a tool for organizing and distributing course materials in a hierarchical manner. Related tools such as a Glossary, reference materials, and discussions can be linked directly to pages of content.
Discussions/Bulletin Boards
Allows for communication among all course participants (Instructors, TAs and students). Discussions can be public, involving all course participants, or private, limited to a specific group of participants.
Image Database
This tool is used as a searchable image archive, which allows for the association of annotations and text with each image.
Index
This tool is used to link keywords or subjects to create an index for the course, similar to an index in a textbook.
Links
This tool allows instructors to provide links to WWW information as well as to single pages or content in the course.
Private Mail
This tool allows students and other members of the course to send private messages to each other or to the instructor. There is also a utility to send and receive attachments.
Presentations
This tool provides students, or groups of students, with file space and authoring privileges so they can upload prepared Web pages for viewing by the other members of the class. It can also be used as a file-sharing feature or an assignment upload feature.
Quizzes/Surveys
This tool allows an instructor to develop and deliver quizzes and surveys online. Security features include timed release, password release, and location restrictions. A survey tool is also available for information gathering and evaluations.
References
This tool gives students access to supplementary information sources such as URLs, journal articles or books, and can be used to link to library resources.
Student Homepages
This tool enables each student in the course to create a homepage for viewing by other members of the course. This tool is often used to encourage students to share information about themselves and helps build a community within the course.
Search
This tool allows students to search a course for related content. Search results can include discussion topics / content, course materials, indexes, titles etc.
Self Tests
The self-test tools allow the students access to multiple choice review questions for pages of content. Immediate feedback can be added so the students know which areas they need improvement on.
Student Tools
These icons are often used to link students to an organizer page, or sub-page, of course tools.
Syllabus
This icon usually links to an information page about the course, its requirements, course objectives and contact information. A syllabus can be generated using WebCT’s syllabus tool, or can be a HTML file created by the instructor.
Tips
This tool allows the instructors to provide tips or FAQs for students in a course
Tool Page
Tool pages, or organizer pages, enable an instructor to group a set of tools together on a separate page to prevent the Course Homepage from becoming too cluttered. Communication tools are an example of a set of tools frequently clustered on a separate organizer page.
View Your Record/My Grades
This tool allows students to view information about their grades, if the instructor has chosen to enable this feature.
Whiteboard
This tool allows course participants to dynamically share a common graphical palette in real-time. It can be used to review diagrams and images uploaded by the instructor.
