WebCT Course Files Location and Organization

It is important for the course instructor/designer to understand where the files they are using are stored. The files are NOT located on your (local) computer. They are located on the WebCT server - a file server that may be in the same building or anywhere in the world. Your UMass WebCT server is managed by Academic Computing/OIT and is located in the Lederle GRC building.

As a result:

  • In order to use any file in your WebCT course the file must reside on the UMass WebCT server within your course.
  • You can use the WebCT-Files folder and upload your own files to your course My-Files folder.
  • The files must be in a Web readable format (html, gif, jpeg, text, pdf, etc.)

You can see the files that comprise you course content in one of two interfaces:

  1. Manage Files
  2. From a "Pick Menu" associated with a WebCT tool (banner, tool icon, etc.)

Both of these are shown below:

Manage Files
Pick Menu

Note that files in WebCT are organized into two main folders:

WebCT-Files A library of clip-art, icons, banners and more that can be used in the creation of any course. Files in that folder cannot be altered in any way (deleted, renamed, moved, etc.). The can, however, be used or copied to the [My-Files] folder.
My-Files

Files in the My-Files folder are private to that course, and have been placed there by the designer, either by uploading (copying from a local computer to the server) copied from the WebCT-Files folder.

The My-Files folder is where the designer puts the files that form his/her course content.
