The course
information tools are actually important communication tools.
They help your students stay informed about what you expect from
them and what they can expect from you.

tool to learn more about it's capabilities:
Calendar Tool
The Calendar
tool allows you and your students to share important dates for
class events. The Calendar is automatically available on the UMass
WebCT course template. All you have to do is click on the dates
where you have scheduled class events, and fill in the blanks
with information about each one. You can allow students to do
the same, or restrict students to private entries only. When using
the Calendar, include all important dates, if possible. Examples
- assignment due dates, test dates, relevant extracurricular events,
class cancellations, even class topics.
-
Conclusions:
Though everyone enjoys a surprise now and then, most learners
would prefer not to be surprised when it comes to due dates
and tests. Providing dates on the Calendar will help avoid
any unwelcome surprises. In addition, you can use the Calendar
tool to help learners understand how they might direct themselves
through the course materials.
-
Seven
Principles: The Calendar tool is especially useful in
emphasizing time on task and communicating high expectations
for learners. It may also help to encourage active learning
if you and your students post information about class-related
extracurricular events that may make in-class learning more
meaningful.
Syllabus Tool
The
Syllabus tool allows you to convey information about how your
course is organized, what you expect from your students, what
they can expect from you, and any other information you might
like to include. The Syllabus tool has two modes of operation
- you may fill in the blanks provided, or you may upload an HTML
document that you have created in a program like Netscape Composer,
Macromedia Dreamweaver, or even your favorite word processor.
-
Conclusions:
This
tool is appropriate for adult learners because adults prefer
to know what will occur in class and when. By including expectations,
learners will understand in advance what they must do as well
as what you will do during the course.

on task and communicate high expectations to learners.
